Can my vision be improved with laser vision correction?
Laser vision correction, or laser eye surgery, is a painless, refractive surgery procedure that uses an excimer laser's cool beam of light to gently reshape the cornea and correct for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia. The laser works in a matter of seconds, and vision is immediately improved, making it possible for most patients to see without glasses or contact lenses. Prior to the treatment, a comprehensive evaluation and eye examination is performed to determine if one is a good candidate for the procedure, or if other options need to be explored. The first visit takes about 2 hours, and most patients will be dilated in the course of the evaluation, which may make it difficult to read for an hour or two. In most cases, laser vision correction can be performed as soon as the day after the initial consultation.
- You must have healthy eyes, and be at least 18 years old for nearsightedness and 21 years old for astigmatism
- Your vision must be stable for at least one year before the laser vision procedure
- You are not a good candidate if you have degenerative or autoimmune diseases, or if you're pregnant or nursing, of if you have a condition that makes healing difficult.
